SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Luis Pimentel-Guerrero, Erick Dessens, Jace Jeremiah, and Ryan Ellis each had a pair of hits for Sacramento State but visiting California scored the final six runs of the game to win 8-2 in the second game of a three-game series on Saturday at John Smith Field.
The Golden Bears took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the first four hitters in their order reached base. The Hornets were able to limit the damage as the team recorded an out at the plate on a failed safety squeeze and later got a ground out to leave the bases loaded.
Sacramento State tied the game in the second inning as the team sent eight men to the plate. Ellis singled up the middle to drive in Jeremiah and Pimentel-Guerrero added an infield hit with the bases loaded to knot the score.
The game, however, did not remain tied for long as Daniel Murrillo led off the third with a single and he came around to score on a home run to left center by Cade Campbell. Cal added a run in the fifth and three in the eighth to keep Sacramento State at bay.
The Hornets were not without chances. The team brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh but was unable to capitalize, ending the day with 10 runners left on base.
Sacramento State used eight pitchers in the game with none throwing more than two innings. Konner Entz tallied three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work while Colin Hunter pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts.
Ethan Foley earned the win for Cal to improve to 2-0. Foley lasted six innings while scattering eight hits and two runs with a pair of strikeouts. Otto Espinoza picked up the save over the final three innings.
The series will wrap up in Berkeley on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sacramento State's next home game will be on March 10 against UMass-Lowell.
