SACRAMENTO -- Junior
Alexa Ortiz has been named the Big Sky Conference Pitcher of the Week after helping the Hornets to a 4-0 record at the Mustang Classic in San Luis Obispo.
The season is just three weeks old, and Ortiz has already earned the honor twice (Feb. 9).Â
Last week, the right-hander started two of the Hornets' four games, and went 2-0 with two complete games, a 0.50 ERA and 0.71 WHIP. In 14.0 innings, she was dominant, allowing just two runs (one earned) and four hits (all singles) with 14 strikeouts. Opponents hit .085 when she was in the circle, and both of her complete game efforts were two-hitters.
In the Hornets' 6-1 win over Cal Poly, the Chandler, Ariz., native allowed two hits and one run while striking out six batters. She followed up that effort two days later in another complete-game effort, yielding two hits and one unearned run with eight strikeouts.
Ortiz is now 4-1 with a 0.97 ERA and 0.89 WHIP. In 36.0 innings, she has allowed just 18 hits (two extra base hits) with 39 strikeouts. Of her seven appearances, she has allowed one run or less in six of them. Her 0.97 ERA is the 29th best mark in the nation.
Ortiz is a huge part of a Sacramento State pitching staff that has a 1.64 ERA - the 10th best mark in the nation.
