SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Senior
Katie Marsh's walk-off, two-run homer delivered Sacramento State a 5-4 victory over Manhattan in the second round of the Mustang Invite on Friday morning.
The Hornets entered the seventh trailing, 4-3, and
Saskia Raab drew a four-pitch walk to open the frame. That set up Marsh, who ambushed a 1-0 pitch, and sent a rocket over the right-center field wall for the game winner. Marsh has now homered in four of the last five games, leads the team with five round trippers, and is now batting .429.
Raab, a transfer from Nevada, reached base safely in all four plate appearances, going 3-for-3 with a walk while raising her average to a team-best .472 to go with a .537 on-base percentage.
Off to its best start since 1995, Sacramento State has won five straight while improving to 10-2. The Hornets play twice more at the Mustang Classic, including later today vs. San Jose State at 2:30 p.m., and tomorrow morning vs. Pacific at 9:30 a.m.
Sacramento State has played seven straight games away from home, and is 6-1 over that stretch.
The Hornets never led in today's game until the Marsh blast. Manhattan took a 2-0 lead in the first inning before RBI-singles from
Erin Garcia and
Karissa Avila tied things at 2-2 in the second. The Jaspers scored twice in the sixth to reclaim a two-run advantage, before the Hornets got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when
Mariah Avalos' single drove home
Addy Buckley. That set the stage for the dramatic seventh.
Danyelle Leone worked the first five innings, allowing six hits and three runs with three strikeouts.
Keeli Smith (2-0) got the win in relief, tossing the final two frames.
Raab had three of the Hornets' 10 hits, and Avila was 2-for-3.
Madi Mendoza,
Hailee Bustos, Marsh, Garcia and Avalos had the other hits. The starts for Garcia (3B) and Bustos (DP) were the first of their collegiate careers, while Avila (RF) was making her second collegiate start.
