SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --
Kennedie Bacon tossed a four-hit shutout, and
Karissa Avila had a career-high three hits to lead Sacramento State to a 4-0 victory over San Jose State on Friday afternoon.
The Hornets improved to 3-0 at the Mustang Classic, a three-day tournament hosted by Cal Poly. Sacramento State had already defeated Cal Poly and Manhattan, and conclude the tourney tomorrow vs. Pacific at 9:30 a.m.
The Hornets, off to their best start in 31 years, improved to 11-2 (the 1995 squad began the season 12-1). The 11-2 record is also the second best start to a season in Sacramento State's Div. I era (1990-pres.). In addition, the Hornets have won a season-high six straight games.Â
Sacramento State's only losses of the season came to Colorado State and a Grand Canyon team that is currently ranked 26th in the nation. The Hornets are now 8-1 away from home, including a 6-0 record on neutral fields.
In today's game, Bacon threw her third shutout of the season, allowing just four hits with three strikeouts. She allowed just one runner past second base. The senior right-hander has been dominant, and is now 4-1 with a 1.00 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. Opponents are hitting just .167 and she has four complete games in five starts.Â
The Hornets matched their season high with 12 hits, led by Avila who was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Malissa George (2x4, R) and
Hailee Bustos (2x2, BB) also had multiple hits. Eight Hornet starters had a hit, including
Saskia Raab who improved her hitting streak to seven games.
Katie Marsh had a double, and improved her hitting streak to a career-high tying eight games.
Sacramento State scored twice in the second (RBI-singles from
Jenna Birch and
Lafulafu Malepeai) and two more in the fifth on an
Erin Garcia grounder scoring
Faith Epperson and an Avila RBI-single.
Tomorrow morning's game vs. Pacific will be the first of back-to-back games against the Tigers. The Hornets host Pacific on Wednesday, followed by hosting the Capital Classic Feb. 27-March 1.
