Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

HUGE REBOUNDING ADVANTAGE LEADS IDAHO TO 86-80 WIN OVER MEN’S BASKETBALL

SACRAMENTO -- Playing with just eight healthy players, the undersized Hornets were outrebounded, 49-28, on the way to an 86-80 loss to Idaho on Saturday evening at Hornet Pavilion.

Of those 49 Idaho rebounds, 18 came on the offensive glass, resulting in a 19-2 advantage in second chance points. Neither team led by more than three points the majority of the second half until Idaho used a 10-3 run over the game's final 3:11 to pull out the victory. Sacramento State led, 77-76, after an Arman Madi fast break layup, but Idaho scored the game's next four points and didn't look back.

Idaho led for over 34 minutes of clock (34:27), but a good portion of those minutes - especially the second half - were a one-possession game. Sacramento State held a 22-10 advantage in points off turnovers, and 20-4 in fast break points, but it was not enough to overcome the rebounding disparity.

Both teams shot 42% from the field, but Idaho buried 14-of-34 from distance while the Hornets were 6-for-19. Sacramento State shot 85% (28-33) from the free throw line, and was outscored in the first (42-40) and second (44-40) halves.

The Hornets, who have played with seven or eight healthy bodies each of the last four games, dropped to 9-18 overall and 5-10 in the Big Sky Conference. The team fell to 9-4 at home, and only three games remain in the regular season. The Big Sky Tournament - all 10 of the league's teams qualify - will take place in Boise, Idaho, on March 7-11.

Idaho, picked fourth in the Big Sky preseason coaches poll, improved to 15-13 overall and 7-8 in the Big Sky.

Of the Hornets' eight active players, five scored in double figures. That included freshman Mark Lavrenov who posted his sixth double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Prophet Johnson added 15 points, three rebounds, six assists and five steals. Johnson, the team's leading scorer, was held to just three points in the second half on 1-of-8 shooting.

Arman Madi, who started for the first time in his collegiate career, posted 15 points and two assists. Jahni Summers had 11 points, and Taj Glover 10 points and a +9 in plus/minus. Romari Robinson, who played pesky defense all evening, had four points, six rebounds and two steals.

Sacramento State will conclude the regular season with three games in five days. That includes Thursday at Montana (6 pm PT), Saturday at Montana State (12 pm PT), and Monday (March 2) at home vs. Idaho State at 7 p.m. Hornet seniors Johnson and Shaqir O'Neal will be honored prior to Monday's game as part of Senior Night.
