WOMEN’S TENNIS WINS MARATHON DUAL WITH FRESNO STATE, 4-3

SACRAMENTO -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team clinched the doubles point, then outlasted the Bulldogs for three of the first four wins in singles play on Saturday afternoon, handing visiting Fresno State only its second loss of the year with a 4-3 decision at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex on campus.

The Hornets improved to 4-3 overall on the season, matching the scores from each of their last three dual matches. Saturday marked the fifth time in the team's first seven contests that Sacramento State has battled to a 4-3 decision, improving to 2-3 in those contests.

Having won five of their first six matches entering the day, the Bulldogs had their two-match winning streak snapped with the defeat, falling to 5-2 on the year.

Sacramento State took a quick 1-0 lead in the match as the duo of freshman Cami Maldonado Gutierrez and junior Reese Walker posted a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles before the tandem of Emilija Pranyte and Palina Saulevich clinched the point with a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot.

Redshirt junior Lou Baudouin quickly gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead in the match with a 6-1, 6-1, win over Andjela Lopicic at the No. 2 spot in singles, improving her to 6-0 overall on the year in singles play after making her debut at that position in the lineup this year.

A win at No. 3 broke up the shutout for the Bulldogs, but the Hornets turned the tables with a pair of marathon three-set wins at No. 6 and No. 5, respectively to clinch the dual.

Saulevich was the first off at the No. 6 spot, bouncing back from a first-set defeat to post a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, victory over Klara Vukicevic. Pranyte then brought home the winning point, defeating Louna Cormier, 7-5, 6-7 (2), 6-4.

In all, four of the six singles matches went to three sets.

Sacramento State closes out the weekend on Sunday (Feb. 15) with a 10:30 a.m. first serve at Pacific.
