SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In recognition of his nearly four decades as a part of the Sacramento State community and 36 years as head coach of the men's soccer program, the Hornets will pay tribute to long-time mentor Michael Linenberger at halftime of Saturday's Big West contest against Cal State Bakersfield as part of alumni day festivities at Hornet Soccer Field.
Linenberger announced his retirement from his post in late July, ending a tenure that made him the longest-tenured head coach in school history. He is one of four Hornet head coaches to hold their position for more than 30 years. His 36 seasons at the helm ranked sixth among active Division I head coaches before his announcement.
During his time on campus, he helped lead the Hornets to 234 victories and a pair of NCAA Tournament berths in 2009 and 2010, advancing to the second round in both of those seasons thanks to wins over Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara, respectively. A four-time conference coach of the year — three in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and another in The Big West — Linenberger led Sacramento State to MPSF regular season crowns in 2001 and 2009 and a pair of tournament crowns in 2009-10.
Unbeaten in its last three matches following a Big West-opening draw at UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday night, the Hornets and the Roadrunners kick-off at 4 p.m.
