OGDEN, Utah -- Four Hornets scored in double figures, led by
Mikey Williams' game-high 26 points, but it was not enough in Sacramento State's 95-82 loss at Weber State on Saturday evening.
Playing its sixth straight road game, Sacramento State dropped to 4-10 overall and 0-2 in the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets, who have not played at home since Nov. 25, open the Big Sky schedule with three straight road games. That includes next Saturday at Portland State.
Weber State improved 7-8 overall and 1-1 with the victory. The Hornets have always had trouble in Ogden, as the team is now 3-28 when playing Weber State on the road.
After
Jahni Summers opened the game's scoring with a 3-pointer, Weber State responded with a 14-2 run, and led for nearly 39 minutes of clock. Though the Wildcats never led by more than 16 points the entire way, Weber State kept its lead at eight points or more the majority of the way.
Sacramento State, which trailed at the break, 50-39, continued to scratch and claw throughout the second half. That included a 9-0 run to get within six points (67-61) of the Wildcat lead with 9:51 to play. The Hornets would later cut the deficit again to six points at 70-64, but got no closer.
Williams continued his torrid play. After scoring a career-best 34 points on Thursday at Idaho State, he had a game-high 26 points this evening to go with four rebounds and a steal. He is averaging a Big Sky-best 30.0 points per game in conference play, and is averaging 23.6 ppg over his last five games. After scoring 12 points in the first half this evening, he added 14 more in the second half.
The big difference in tonight's game was the free throw line where Weber State converted on 11 more freebies. Sacramento State, uncharacteristically, shot just 63% (15-24) from the line while the Wildcats were at 77% (26-34). Weber State made just one more field goal (SAC 29-65; WSU 30-59) and both teams converted on nine three balls. Weber State finished 9-for-18 from distance, including Vartiainen Viljani who scored 20 points on 6-of-8 from 3PT.
Joining Williams in double figures for the Hornets were
Mark Lavrenov (12 points, four rebounds),
Jayden Teat (12 points, including 3-of-7 from distance) and
Taj Glover (career-high 10 points and four rebounds). Lavrenov, Teat and Glover all came off the bench, as did
Arman Madi who had eight points, four rebounds, two steals and three blocked shots. Glover (+6), Teat (+5) and Madi (+5) all finished in the positive in plus/minus, and the Hornets received 42 points from their bench.
Prophet Johnson finished with seven points (one shy of his season low) while also addling five rebounds and five assists, and
Shaqir O'Neal posted two points, a season-high eight rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocks.
Through two conference games, Sacramento State is averaging 83.0 points per game, but is yielding 96.0 ppg.
The Hornets are back in action on Saturday at Portland State. The game will tip at 2 p.m., and conclude the team's season-long seven game road trip.
