HONOLULU, Hawaii -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team opened the 2026 spring season in sweeping fashion, blanking host Hawai'i Pacific by a 7-0 score on Tuesday afternoon at the Kailua Racquet Club in Honolulu.
The Hornets won their regular season opener for the second straight year and remained undefeated in four all-time meetings with the Sharks, who fell to 0-1 overall.
Sacramento State made quick work of the doubles point as Palina Saulevich and Reese Walker were off first with a 6-1 win at No. 3, and the duo of Lou Baudouin and Emilija Pranyte clinched the point with a 6-3 win at No. 2. Irene Riva and Cami Maldonado Gutierrez wrapped up the sweep with a 6-2 win at No. 1.
In singles play, the Hornets won five of the six contests in straight sets, including victories by newcomers Maldonado Gutierrez and Isabella Temenugov and the No. 4 and No. 6 spots, respectively, in their collegiate debuts. Maldonado Gutierrez's, 6-2, 7-5, win over Rosa Viller Moller proved to be the decisive point.
The lone match to go three was at the top spot in the lineup as Reese Walker rebounded from a 6-4 loss in the opening set against Evi Roobol to post wins of 6-0 and 6-4 in the final two sets to finish-off the match.
Riva dropped only two games at the No. 2 spot in her straight-set win, while Pranyte at No. 3 and Saulevich at No. 5 also wrapped up victories.
Sacramento State remains in the "Aloha State" for two more matches, taking on the University of Hawai'i on Thursday (Jan. 22) at 4:30 p.m. PT and Friday (Jan. 23) at 6 p.m. PT
