OPPONENT PREVIEW

  • Oregon State has competed in a pair of meets this season and stands at 0-4 overall despite being 34th in this week's national rankings. The Beavers most recently lost 195.675-194.525 at BYU. Sophia Esposito tied for first on floor with a 9.900 for the team's top individual placement. OSU started the year by finishing fourth in a four-team meet which included Washington, Cal and UCLA. In that meet, the Beavers scored 195.550 and were led by Taylor DeVries who scored 9.925 on bars.
  • Oregon State concluded the 2025 season ranked 14th nationally with an average of 196.913 and an NQS of 197.185. The team was led by former Olympian Jade Carey who qualified for the 2025 NCAA Championships. Carey is currently serving as a volunteer assistant coach for the program.
  • Head coach Tanya Chaplin owns a 501-308-6 overall record in her 29 seasons leading Oregon State. Chaplin's teams have advanced to the NCAA Championship 13 times and have qualified for a regional in all but one of her seasons.

A LOOK AT THE LAST MEET

  • Sacramento State started the year with a victory for the second consecutive season with a 193.925-190.050 win over Alaska Anchorage last Sunday afternoon at The Nest. The Hornets accounted for all four event winners as well as the all-around and also won the team title in each event.
  • Sarah Lutrel finished in first place on vault, beam and in the all-around while Jillianne Lastra recorded her first career victory on bars and Kara Houghton won on floor.

STARTING OFF RIGHT

  • Sacramento State recorded several top 10 school records for a season-opening meet. The team's total of 48.900 on beam was the third-highest in program history. The bars score of 48.275 ranked seventh and the floor total of 48.450 is tied for ninth. Overall, the 193.925 was the fifth-highest by a Hornet team to start the season.
  • Individually, Sara Lutrel is now tied for second in a season-opener with a 9.850 on beam. The only score better than Lutrel's belongs to current assistant coach Amber Koeth who scored 9.875 to start the 2022 season. Kara Houghton's 9.825 on floor is tied for the fifth best by a Sacramento State gymnast top begin and is the best since 2016.

MEMORABLE FIRST APPEARANCES

  • New faces for the Hornets accounted for five routines and three exhibitions against the Seawolves. The group was highlighted by redshirt freshman Kaela Copeland who scored 9.750 on beam and floor. Copeland was with the team all of 2025 but never performed.
  • McKenna Carnesi also made her debut at Sacramento State as she was in the lineup on bars. Carnesi came to the team a year ago but missed the entire season due to a foot injury. She began her collegiate career at Washington in 2024, competing in a pair of meets on bars.

EXPERIENCE IS KEY

  • The senior trio of Kara Houghton, Sarah Lutrel and Rylin Zimmerman have been fixtures in the Sacramento State lineup throughout their careers. The three have combined to perform 292 routines in the lineup since 2023, including 89 on beam.
