DRIESSEN CLAIMS SHARE OF BEAM TITLE, GYMNASTICS FINISHES SECOND AT MPSF CHAMPIONSHIP

Hornets score 193.400 in final meet of the season

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Kaitlyn Driessen tied for first place on bars and the Sacramento State gymnastics team recorded a narrow second-place finish at the MPSF Gymnastics Championships on Saturday night at Southern Utah.

Host, and 26th-ranked Southern Utah, won the meet with a team score of 194.850. The Hornets totaled 193.400 to edge UC Davis by a half-tenth of a point for second place. Alaska Anchorage was fourth at 191.600.

Sacramento State started the meet on bars and received a team score of 48.575. Jillianne Lastra and McKenna Carnesi led the team with each scoring 9.750 to tie for fifth place. Kara Houghton was close behind with a 9.700 to tie for ninth.

The Hornets started its beam rotation strong. Athena Jones led off with a 9.825 to tie for third overall. Kaela Copeland followed with a 9.725 before Driessen scored 9.900 to match her career high. That score tied her with UC Davis' Amelia Moneymaker for the top spot on the event. Sacramento State incurred a fall in its next routine but bounced back with a 9.800 from Sarah Lutrel who tied for sixth place. A fall in the final routine forced the team to count one towards its team total, resulting in a 48.475.

Houghton tied for fifth overall on floor with a team-leading 9.850 during the third rotation. She was followed by Lexie Frank (9.750) and Jones (9.725). The team wrapped up the meet on vault where freshman Cady Gaumont led the way with a 9.675. The event score of 47.950 was just enough for the Hornets to finish ahead of UC Davis and record its best MPSF Championship finish since 2017.

Southern Utah's Niya Randolph finished in first place on vault and bars but was topped in the all-around by Moneymaker who scored 39.375 compared to 39.300 from Randolph.
