MEN’S SOCCER FALLS AT NO. 20 SAN FRANCISCO, 3-0

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Senior goalkeeper Andres Rosales tied his career high with seven saves as visiting Sacramento State was down just one at the break, but host and No. 20-ranked San Francisco tacked on two more scores in the second half en route to a 3-0 victory on Monday night at Negoesco Stadium.

Facing their third top-25 opponent of the season, the Hornets could not build off the momentum of their first win of the season in falling to 1-6-1 overall, while the nationally ranked Dons improved to 5-1-1 overall on the year.

Making his second consecutive start — and his fourth overall this season — Rosales faced 23 shots and matched his save total from his last appearance when he stopped seven shots in a 2-1 win over Pacific last week on Sept. 11.

Six of those stops came during a busy first half in which he held San Francisco at bay until the 37th minute when the Dons broke up the shutout with a goal by Owen Benson for a 1-0 lead.

The score remained that way through the first half, but USF quickly doubled its advantage just four minutes into the second period and capped the scoring with its third of the night in the 88th minute.

Junior Zac Giles led the Hornets with three shot attempts for the match, placing two of those on frame, while three other Hornets finished with shots on the night. Sean Battistessa had the only other attempt that challenged the Dons' keeper with a header in the 85th minute.

Sacramento State closes out non-conference play on Friday (Sept. 19) at 4 p.m., hosting Saint Mary's at Hornet Soccer Field. It is the final tune-up before the start of Big West Conference play the following week when the Hornets host Cal State Bakersfield (Oct. 1) and Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 4).
