SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sophomore Hiroshi Yang converted a penalty in the 54th minute for his first goal of the season and the Sacramento State men's soccer team rallied to forge a 1-1 draw with visiting Saint Mary's on Friday afternoon at Hornet Soccer Field.
The Hornets moved to 1-6-2 overall on the season with the loss, closing out non-conference play by splitting the points with their long-time rivals. The Gaels remained winless on the year, moving to 0-3-4 overall with the draw.
Saint Mary's was the first on the board in the 18th minute as a long throw from the left side by TJ Knight made its way into the box where it took a deflection off a Hornet defender, who redirected the ball into the net for an own goal and a 1-0 Gael lead.
It remained that way through the remainder of the first half before Sacramento State was able to come up with the equalizer. A corner kick curled toward the near left post where it was ruled that a Saint Mary's defender committed a handball, awarding the Hornets a penalty.
Yang stepped to the spot and rifled a shot to the upper right side for his second career score, tying the match at one apiece.
Searching for the winner, the Hornets finished the second half with seven of the final 10 shot attempts, including a dangerous shot from distance by freshman Ronan Rattigan that was just tipped over the bar by the Gaels goalkeeper.
Sacramento State finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots, but only five combined attempts were put on frame by the two sides. Junior goalkeeper Lucas Bost finished with three saves in the match while he and the defense successfully defended seven corners by the Gaels.
The Hornets now have 12 days off before the start of Big West Conference play as they will host Cal State Bakersfield (Oct. 1) and Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 4). Both matches are scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
