CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Sacramento State had sizable runs in all three sets to eventually defeat Dartmouth, 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 27-25), on Thursday evening at Connell Recreation Center.
That includes closing the first set on an 8-3 run, using an 11-3 run midway through the second set, and overcoming a 23-20 deficit (and two set points) in the third. The match ended on an
Ashlynn Archer ace, one of nine aces the Hornets tallied. Sacramento State had 17 more kills than the Big Green (43-26) while hitting .316 compared to .126 for Dartmouth.
Sacramento State (3-4 overall) was playing its first match of a tournament hosted by Boston College. The three-day event will also see the Hornets take on Boston College tomorrow at 3 p.m. PT, and UAlbany on Saturday at 8 a.m. PT.
The Hornets have now won three of their last four matches after beginning the season 0-3. In addition, the team has played four straight matches without the services of middle blockers
Karlie Spohn and
Skyler Gartin, who are both injured and started games last season. All 14 active players appeared in tonight's match for Sacramento State.
Archer was brilliant yet again as the senior middle blocker had 10 kills and a .643 hitting percentage (10-1-14). She is now hitting .415 this season, the second best mark in the Big Sky Conference. Outside hitter
Victoria Marthaler had double figures in kills for the fifth straight match, and finished with 14 to go with two aces. She was one of four Hornets with two aces apiece, including
Reese Ampi,
Kate Doorn and
Mia Guevara.
Freshman
Kelsey Heffner had five kills, five blocks and a .444 hitting percentage. Heffner has filled in well for the injured duo of Spohn/Gartin, as she is now hitting .419 this year.Â
Freshman
Keonahi'ilani Solaita posted a season-best six kills, and senior
Greta Davis added five kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Ampi had a match-best 15 digs, and now is the owner of a stretch of six consecutive matches with 14-plus digs. Doorn added 20 assists and seven digs.
Tomorrow's match at Boston College (3 p.m. PT) will be streamed on ESPN+. It is the Hornets' only match of the three-day event that will have a video stream.
