RENO, Nev. -- Nevada narrowly won the doubles point, and then won matches at Nos. 2, 3 and 5 singles to beat Sacramento State, 4-0, on Tuesday afternoon at McArthur Tennis Center.
Playing the first of just four remaining matches in the regular season (and two non-league matches), Sacramento State dropped to 9-9 overall. The Hornets were playing for the first time since March 22.
Nevada improved to 11-6 overall and 3-1 at home. The Wolf Pack have won five of their last seven matches. The two teams were playing each other for the first time since 2022.
The Wolf Pack began the match by winning the doubles point, which included a 9-7 tiebreaker at No. 2 to clinch what had been a 1-1 tie. The Hornets got a win at No. 3 from
Miles Whitehead and
Martin Duris by a 6-2 score.
Nevada then won the first three singles contests before the match was stopped because the Wolf Pack had the necessary four points for victory. Duris had his seven-match singles winning streak end with his loss at No. 5.
Henry Lamchinniah (No. 1),
Hayden Rand (No. 4) and
David Dai (No. 6) each won the first sets of their matches when play was halted.
Sacramento State plays twice more this week, including Friday at Northern Arizona (10 a.m.), and back home Sunday vs. UC San Diego at 1 p.m. The Hornets' final match of the regular season is Saturday, April 19, at home vs. Idaho, before the Big Sky Conference Tournament takes place in Phoenix from April 24-26.
