FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Despite a straight set singles win from
Gur Libal, Northern Arizona defeated Sacramento State, 6-1, on Friday morning at the NAU Tennis Center.
The Lumberjacks, who have clinched the Big Sky Conference regular season championship, improved to 15-8 overall, 7-0 in league and 9-0 at home.
The Hornets were playing their final non-conference road match of the season, and dropped to 9-10 overall and 3-4 in the Big Sky. Sacramento State, on the cusp of securing a Big Sky Tournament berth, has just two regular season matches remaining.
In today's match, the Lumberjacks won the doubles point before taking singles matches at Nos. 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6. The lone singles win was Libal, a freshman, who won his match at No. 2 in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).
Martin Duris, also a freshman, split his first two sets before losing the third in a super tiebreaker (10-4). Every other match was decided in straight sets.
Sacramento State is back on Sunday to host UC San Diego at 1 p.m. The match was recently added to the schedule after the two teams original playing date (Feb. 2) was canceled because of rain. The Hornets conclude the regular season at home against Big Sky foe Idaho on Saturday, April 19.
The Big Sky Tournament will take place April 24-26 in Phoenix. The top six teams in the conference qualify for the single elimination event. Should the Hornets clinch a berth in the coming week, the team will be either the No. 5 or 6 seed.
