MEN’S TENNIS BLANKS UC SAN DIEGO, IMPROVES TO 8-3 AT HOME

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State won the doubles point, and received singles wins from Henry Lamchinniah, Gur Libal and Martin Duris to beat UC San Diego, 4-0, on Sunday afternoon on campus.

The match was stopped with three singles competitions still playing because the Hornets already had the necessary four points for victory. Today's match was originally scheduled for Feb. 2, but rain forced the postponement until today.

The Hornets, who recently clinched a spot in the Big Sky Conference Tournament (April 24-26 in Phoenix), were playing their second to last match of the regular season. The team, despite using four freshmen in the lineup all season, improved to 10-10 overall and 8-3 at home.

The Hornets conclude the regular season on Saturday at home vs. Idaho at 2 p.m. Senior Hayden Rand will be honored for his contributions to the program prior to the match.

In today's matchup, the Hornets won the doubles point after the No. 1 team of Lamchinniah/Libal (6-3), and No. 3 team of David Dai/Miles Whitehead (7-5) were both victorious.

Libal then gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead after winning his No. 2 singles match by a 6-2, 6-4 score, and Duris (7-5, 6-2 at No. 4) and Lamchinniah (6-4, 6-3 at No. 1) followed with victories. Matches at No. 3 (Nick Bowles), No. 5 (Dai) and No. 6 (Whitehead) were stopped because Sacramento State had already clinched the victory. Rand did not play today while nursing an injury.

"We are a young team, and I've been very proud all season how hard these guys work and compete" Sacramento State head coach Kevin Kurtz said. "And the team continued to compete at a high level today. We have one more match before the Big Sky Tournament, and I'm excited to see us play these next couple weeks."
