BEAVERTON, Ore. -- After suffering its first Big Sky Conference defeat of the season, the Sacramento State women's tennis team bounced back in dominating fashion, winning eight of the nine matches on the day to sweep past host Portland State by a 7-0 score on Monday morning at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton, Ore.
The Hornets improved to 16-3 overall and 6-1 in league play, posting their eighth shutout of the year and their ninth victory in their last 10 dual matches. The Vikings fell to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in conference action.
Sacramento State opened with a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point for the 14th time in 19 matches this year, posting victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup. The duo of Lou Baudouin and Emilija Pranyte won for the 10th time in 14 matches as a pairing thanks to a 6-3 win over Ayra Salim and Nene Uemura, while Reese Walker and Palina Saulevich improved to 6-1 this season as a duo with a clinching 6-4 victory over Hana Abdelhamid and Scarlett Perkins.
It marked the fourth time this season that the tandem of Walker and Saulevich have clinched the doubles point for the Hornets.
Switching to singles, Sacramento State made quick work of their hosts, winning all six contests in straight sets. Walker was the first off, needing only 45 minutes to take care of Abdelhamad, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 2 position and was followed closely by Elena Mercioiu, who posted a, 6-0, 6-3. win over Scarlett Perkins at No. 5 to win her team-high 15th singles match of the season.
Saulevich then nailed down the victory for the Hornets, defeating Ayra Salim at the No. 6 position, 6-2, 6-2, for her second match clinching point of the year.
Mercioiu and Walker kept their undefeated runs in Big Sky play alive with their victories, moving to 7-0 on the season.
Baudouin improved to 13-5 on the season with her, 6-0, 6-2, win over Nene Uemura at No. 3, followed by Pranyte's, 6-1, 6-4, victory over Kasumi Hirayama at No. 4 and Ferreros' win at No. 1 over Nika Beukers, 6-4, 6-1. Ferreros is now 12-5 overall and 6-1 in league at the top spot in the lineup, while Pranyte improved to 12-6 overall, winning her 10th match at the No. 4 position.
Monday marked the final road dual of the season for Sacramento State, which plays host to its final three matches of the regular season. The Hornets welcome Grand Canyon on Saturday (April 12) at 11 a.m., in their only match of the week before closing with back-to-back duals against Causeway rival UC Davis on April 18 (Noon) and Big Sky foe Idaho on April 19 (11 a.m.).
