WOMEN’S TENNIS POSTS NINTH SHUTOUT OF THE YEAR IN WIN OVER GRAND CANYON

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- No. 75 Sacramento State won the doubles point then took home wins at all three even-numbered positions in singles play on Saturday afternoon, winning its second-straight dual and posting its ninth shutout of the year with a shortened 4-0 victory over Grand Canyon.

The Hornets, back in the national rankings for the first time in three weeks, improved to 17-3 overall with the victory, posting their second consecutive victory in the four-match all-time Division I series with the 'Lopes. GCU fell to 11-10 overall with the loss in its regular season finale.

A pair of 6-2 victories in doubles at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions staked the home team to the early lead as Lou Baudouin and Emilija Pranyte took home the victory in the former, while the duo of Palina Saulevich and Reese Walker clinched the doubles point for the second straight dual and the fifth time in the last eight matches.

Sophomore Irene Riva was the first off in singles play, handing Peyton Duckett a, 6-1, 7-5, defeat at No. 6, followed by another straight-set win from Pranyte at No. 4, defeating Dania Deaifi, 6-4, 7-5. Walker picked up her second clincher of the year — and her first win the team's win over Eastern Washington on March 23 — at No. 2, taking three sets to defeat Gala Arangio, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

Walker won her third consecutive match to improve to 13-4 overall on the season — including an 8-4 mark at No. 2 — while Riva moved to 11-1 and Pranyte posted her 13th victory of the campaign. The doubles tandem of Baudouin and Pranyte also continued to roll, moving to 11-3 overall as a team this year, including an 8-1 mark the No. 2 spot in the lineup.

Sacramento State now has only two matches remaining in the regular season hosting Causeway rival UC Davis on Friday (April 18) at Noon, before welcoming Big Sky rival Idaho on Saturday (April 19) at 11 a.m. The match against the Vandals will be "Senior Day" for the Hornets, who will salute their departing seniors prior to the contest.
