BASEBALL FALLS TO THE CARDINAL IN MIDWEEK CLASSIC

STANFORD, Calif. — Pitching and defense were the name of the game on Monday night at Sunken Diamond as Stanford and Sacramento State went toe-to-toe over nine innings before the Cardinal emerged with a 2-1 victory in a midweek contest.

The Hornets fell to 26-18 overall with the defeat, while the Cardinal improved to 22-19 overall with the win.

Host Stanford put up a pair of runs in the first and Sacramento State answered with an RBI single by Cameron Sewell in the second before the pitchers took over. The Hornet bullpen responded with seven shutout innings, scattering only two hits, walking three, and striking out four while stranding five baserunners — including a runner at second in the third inning and a runner at third in the seventh following a one-out triple.

Freshman Jackson Halverson relieved starter Sean Carey (1-2) and pitched two scoreless innings, followed by three scoreless from classmate Peter Caldera, who struck out a pair. Bryce Stockton allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh and freshman Baylor Sandberg allowed a hit in a scoreless eighth.

Meanwhile, Cardinal starter Nate Dugan (5-0) and Sam Garewal combined to make the one-run lead stand, leaving Sacramento State runners in scoring position in the fourth and sixth innings — both of those at third base.

Junior Ryan Christiansen finished 2-for-3 and was joined in the multi-hit club by Luis Pimentel-Guerrero, who finished 2-for-4 with the run scored. JP Smith, who clobbered his team-high 18th double of the night, moved to within one of the school's single-season top 10 list in the category.

Senior Tyler White, who had reached base safely in his last 20 consecutive games, had his streak come to an end.

Sacramento State closes a run of five games in five days on Tuesday night (April 29) at home, hosting UC Davis in the final game of their three-game midweek "series" at John Smith Field. The two schools have split the first two meetings of the year with the winner of Tuesday's contest earning the right to host two of the three games between the two in 2026.
