SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The No. 75 Sacramento State women's tennis team opened the defense of its Big Sky Conference title with a resounding sweep of visiting Montana on Sunday morning as the Hornets won eight of the nine matches on the day en route to a 7-0 shutout of the Grizzlies at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex.
Sacramento State completed an undefeated week, improving to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Montana, which posted its lone win at No. 1 doubles on the day, fell to 3-8 overall and 1-1 in the Big Sky.
The Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match by winning the first two doubles contests of the day. Sophomore Lou Baudouin and freshman Emilija Pranyte posted a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot and were quickly followed by senior Maddy Ferreros and sophomore Irene Riva's victory at No. 2 by a 6-1 score.
The win by Ferreros and Riva was the duo's second doubles-point clincher of the year and their first since the win over Santa Clara on Feb. 22.
Sacramento State then put the pedal down and cruised to six straight-set victories in singles play to complete the shutout. Pranyte earned the clinching point for the first time this year, posting a 6-2, 6-2, win over Piper Freeman at the No. 4 spot in the lineup.
Riva improved to 4-0 overall on the year with her 6-1, 6-2, win over Olivia Moir at No. 6, while both Elena Mercioiu and Baudouin each picked up their team-best eighth wins of the year, posting victories over Monika Fizova (6-3, 6-1) and Rosie Sterk (6-2, 7-5), respectively.
Mercioiu, who has played at both the No. 4 and No. 5 spots in the lineup this year, improved to 8-1 on the year, while Baudouin, who has split time between No. 2 and No. 3, moved to 8-3 overall.
Sacramento State is off until Saturday (March 15), when they are scheduled to host Seattle University at 10 a.m. — the fifth in a run of seven straight at home for the Hornets.
