MEN’S TENNIS WRAPS UP GOLDEN STATE INVITE WITH 4-2 WIN OVER UTRGV

SACRAMENTO -- Behind singles wins from Henry Lamchinniah, Hayden Rand and Martin Duris, Sacramento State defeated UTRGV, 4-2, on Saturday morning on campus.

The Hornets completed the two-day Golden State Invitational with a 2-1 record. That includes a victory over New Mexico State yesterday. Sacramento State improved its overall record to 7-7, including a 5-2 mark on its home courts.

Once again using a lineup that featured four freshmen and a sophomore, the Hornets started things by winning the doubles point. The combinations of Lamchinniah/Gur Libal at No. 1 (6-1) and David Dai/Miles Whitehead at No. 3 (7-6) were both victorious.

Sacramento State then jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Duris won his singles match at No. 5 by a 7-5, 6-1 score. The Vaqueros then tied things at 2-2 by winning matches at Nos. 2 and 6 singles. However, the Hornets got wins from Lamchinniah (6-3, 7-5 at No. 1) and Rand (6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 4) to clinch the win. Nick Bowles' match was stopped in the third set because the Hornets already had the necessary four points for victory.

Lamchinniah and Duris have both won four straight singles matches.

"I really liked how the team competed throughout the tournament," Sacramento State head coach Kevin Kurtz said. "Our doubles were tremendous, and we had some solid singles play as well. I'm proud of the team and the energy they played with over the last two days."

Sacramento State jumps back into Big Sky Conference play when it hosts Eastern Washington on Saturday at 1 p.m.
