SACRAMENTO --
Martin Duris and
Henry Lamchinniah both went 2-0 in singles play to lead Sacramento State to a split on the first day of the
Golden State Invitational on Friday.
The two-day tournament, co-hosted with UC Davis, featured four matches on the Sacramento State campus today and two more tomorrow. The Hornets played in two of those four contests, defeating New Mexico State, 4-2, and falling to Montana, 5-2.
The Hornets wrap up the event tomorrow at 10 a.m. vs. UTRGV. Sacramento State moved its record to 6-7 overall, and 4-2 at home. Like every match this season, the Hornets played with a singles lineup that included four freshmen, one sophomore and one senior.
In the victory over New Mexico State (8-11), the Hornets won the doubles point before receiving singles wins from Lamchinniah at No. 1 (6-3, 7-6),
Nick Bowles at No. 3 (6-1, 7-5) and Duris at No. 5 (1-6, 6-3, 6-2). The Duris victory clinched the win. The always important doubles point was secured with wins by Bowles/
Hayden Rand at No. 2 (7-5), and Duris/
Miles Whitehead at No. 3 (7-6).
The loss came against a Montana team that improved to 9-2 overall and 1-0 in the Big Sky Conference. The lone victories for Sacramento State came from Lamchinniah (5-7, 6-1, 10-2) and Duris (6-4, 6-4). All six singles matches were close as three went to three sets, and the others were tight two-set affairs.
Both Lamchinniah and Duris have won three straight singles matches. Lamchinniah improved to 9-3 this season (all at No. 1), and Duris moved his record to 7-4 (primarily at No. 5).
