ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The Sacramento State gymnastics team closed its regular season by placing third at the MPSF Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex. The meet was won by No. 23 Southern Utah which scored 196.625 to edge UC Davis (196.400). The Hornets totaled 193.850 while host Alaska Anchorage was fourth at 191.875.
 
Sacramento State opened the meet on floor and scored 48.850 to place itself within striking distance of the top two teams. The team counted five scores of at least 9.725 and was led by a 9.825 from Sarah Lutrel who tied for seventh overall.
 
The Hornets moved to vault in the second rotation and totaled 48.750 and found itself trailing SUU by .625 points at the midway point. The final four vaulters in the Sacramento State lineup received a 9.700 or better, capped by a career-high 9.825 from freshman Kaitlyn Driessen who tied for fourth overall.
 
The team's score of 48.550 on bars during the third rotation kept the Hornets within reach of the leaders. Chloe Cohen paced the team with a 9.800 to tie her career high and tie her for fifth place in the meet. Senior Emma Morgenthaler added a 9.750.
 
Any hopes for a late comeback for Sacramento State was erased in the final rotation as the Hornets were forced to count a pair of low scores on beam. The rotation was highlighted by Morgenthaler who received a 9.800 and tied for sixth place in the meet. Sarah Lutrel added ad 9.775 and the team also counted a 9.725 from Driessen. However, the team's total of 47.700 on beam was its lowest score of the year on the event.
 
UC Davis' Amelia Moneymaker was the all-around champion with a four-event total of 39.500. Moneymaker was also the individual champion on bars and beam. Lutrel finished fourth in the all-around with a season-high 39.075 while Morgenthaler was fifth (38.850).
