WOMEN’S TENNIS POSTS THIRD STRAIGHT SHUTOUT IN BIG SKY SWEEP OF MONTANA STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento State women's tennis team dropped only a single set on the day en route to its fourth consecutive victory, shutting out visiting Montana State, 7-0, in a Big Sky Conference dual match at the Sacramento State Tennis Complex on Friday afternoon.

With the victory, the Hornets improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in Big Sky play, posting its third consecutive shutout — and their fifth of the season — in extending their winning streak. The Bobcats lost their second straight, falling to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in league play.

Quick victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles staked Sacramento State to its ninth doubles point in 13 matches overall this year as Lou Baudouin and Emilija Pranyte posted a 6-1 win at No. 2, followed by a 6-3 victory by Palina Saulevich and Reese Walker. Saulevich and Walker became the eighth different tandem to claim a doubles point clincher this season.

The Hornets then swept through singles play, winning four of the six contests in straight sets. Baudouin was the first off, leading 5-4 in the first set before her opponent was forced to retire. She was followed with victories by Maddy Ferreros at No. 1 and Pranyte at No. 4 to officially clinch the match, before Walker and Elena Mercioiu dispatched their opponents at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively.

Irene Riva closed out the day with the final point, winning the opening set, 6-4, before falling a tiebreaker in the second, 7-6 (5). With the overall match in hand, Riva and Hudson Hawkins played the first to 10 in a decisive third set with Riva winning the race, 10-3.

Pranyte posted her second match clincher in her last three outings, also doing so in a win over Montana on March 9, and is one of five players to clinch a match for Sacramento State this season.

With her win at No. 6, Riva remained undefeated on the season at 6-0, while Mercioiu's straight-set win at No. 5 improved her to a team-high 10-1 — including an 8-0 mark at that spot in the lineup. Pranyte and Baudouin also claimed their ninth wins overall in singles this season.

In doubles, Baudouin and Pranyte improved to a team-best 5-2 as a tandem this year, winning their third straight together, while Saulevich and Walker clinched their first win as a pairing this season.

Sacramento State closes out a seven-match homestand with another Big Sky dual, hosting Eastern Washington on Sunday (March 23) at 11 a.m. on campus.
