SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State won the doubles point, and received singles victories from
Henry Lamchinniah,
Gur Libal,
Nick Bowles and
Martin Duris on the way to a 5-2 victory over Montana State on Thursday afternoon on campus.
The Hornets, playing with four freshmen in the lineup, won their fourth straight while improving to 9-7 overall, 3-3 in the Big Sky Conference and 7-2 at home. Sacramento State is also 5-1 on its current seven-match homestand which concludes Saturday vs. Pacific at noon.
Lamchinniah and Duris both won their sixth straight singles match, and the two are now a combined 22-7 this season. That includes Lamchinniah, a sophomore, who is 12-3 at the No. 1, and Duris, a freshman, who is 10-4 (primarily at No. 5).
Lamchinniah (6-1, 6-2) and Bowles (6-4, 6-2 at No. 4) both won in quick fashion while Duris (6-4, 2-6, 6-2) and Libal (3-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2) won in three sets. Duris play near flawless tennis in the third set of his match. Trailing, 2-1, Duris went on an incredible run - packed with winners - that saw him win 20 of the final 24 points of the set.
Doubles play saw Lamchinniah/Libal (No. 1) and Bowles/
Hayden Rand (No. 2) both win by 6-2 scores. Duris/
Miles Whitehead were up, 5-2, when their match was stopped at No. 3.
"The coaches are I were very impressed with our guys' energy during doubles," Sacramento State head coach
Kevin Kurtz said. "And that carried into singles play. Henry is so consistent, Gur came through with a nice comeback victory, Nick played incredible, and Martin played some of his best tennis of the season in that third set. We have been very good at home, and will look to continue that momentum on Saturday vs. Pacific."
