SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sophomore Cameron Sewell homered in each of this first two at bats and finished with six RBI on the night helping power the Sacramento State offense to double-digit runs for the sixth time this season en route to a 13-3 victory over host Pacific on Tuesday at Klein Family Field.
The Hornets won their first midweek game of the year and improved to 11-9 overall on the season, defeating the Tigers for the third time in four meetings in 2025. Pacific fell to 10-12 overall with the loss.
Sewell, who had two home runs on the season entering the night, slugged a pair of three-run home runs in the second and third innings to log his first career multi-homer game and the third by a Hornet hitter this spring, joining teammate Jakob Poturnak's performances against San Francisco (Feb. 15) and South Dakota State (Feb. 27).
Sewell's six RBI in the game are tied for eighth on the school's single-game list and are the most since Cesar Valero set the record with 10 RBI against Houston Christian (then Houston Baptist) on March 4, 2022.
Senior Tyler White also added a pair of hits — including a triple that led to a run — and walked for a team-high 21st time, while Poturnak finished 3-for-4 and reached base safely five times, scoring three runs and collecting his fifth, three-hit game of the season. Junior Luis Pimentel-Guerrero also homered (his second) as part of a 2-for-4 night, driving in three and scoring three runs, while JP Smith added two more hits.
All told, the three home runs on the night tied a season high set at San Francisco (Feb. 17) and tied against South Dakota State (Feb. 27).
Sewell's first home run of the night cleared the wall in left field after an error and a walk put two on in the second, staking the Hornets to a 3-0 lead. The flood gates opened in the third as Sacramento State scored six times — tied for the most in an inning this season — as White led-off with his triple and came home on Ryan Christiansen's sacrifice fly for the four-run advantage.
An error, single, and walk followed to load the bases for
Elie Kligman, who rolled a single through the right side, scoring Smith and Poturnak for the 6-0 lead. Sewell then tacked on three more with his second home run of the night — a three-run shot over the wall in right to clear the bases and make it 9-0.
Sacramento State's offense kept rolling in the fourth as Smith doubled to left and scored when Poturnak traded places with him with a double down the left field line for a 10-0 lead. Pimentel-Guerrero then capped the scoring for the Hornets by launching a no-doubter over the wall in right for the 12-0 advantage and added an RBI single in the ninth for the final run of the night.
Pacific managed a single run in the sixth and two more in the eighth inning, but got no closer.
Colin Hunter (1-1) picked up his first win of the season for Sacramento State, allowing a run on five hits and striking out three over six innings of work.
Jackson Halverson pitched the seventh and got the first two outs of the eighth before giving way to
Andrew Monson, who closed out the inning.
Peter Caldera pitched a perfect ninth, striking out one.
Regan Carter (0-2) suffered the loss for the Tigers, tagged for five earned (seven overall) on three hits, walking a pair and striking out two over 2.1 innings of work.
The 13 runs on Tuesday improved the Hornets to 4-2 this season when scoring 10-or-more runs, posting their highest total since scoring 14 against South Dakota State on Feb. 27.
Sacramento State opens Western Athletic Conference play this weekend, hosting UT Arlington for a three-game series at
