SOFTBALL FALLS AT HOME TO CAL AFTER LENGTHY RAIN DELAY

SACRAMENTO -- Despite a homer and double from Andrea Lira, and Madison Evers-Lyles extending her hitting streak to 10 games, the Hornets fell at home to Cal, 11-1, in five innings.

The game started late after the two teams waited out a 31-minute rain delay. Cal's bats did not go cold, however, as the Bears had 11 runs and eight hits over five innings. Cal, which is receiving votes in the top 25 poll, increased its winning streak to 14 games while improving to 20-4.

Sacramento State, which has played one of the toughest schedules in the country over its last four games, dropped to 12-12. During the last seven days, the Hornets have played twice against 6th-ranked UCLA, a road game at San Diego State (was receiving votes in the top 25), and today's game vs. a red hot Cal team that hasn't lost since Feb. 20.

The Bears scored four runs in the first and third innings, and tacked on three more in the fourth.

Four Hornets had hits in the game, led by Lira going 2-for-3 with a run, homer, double and RBI. Her third-inning opposite field blast was Lira's team-high tying sixth round tripper of the season. Evers-Lyles, a true freshman, improved her hitting streak to 10 games with a first-inning single. The 10-gamer is the longest by a Sacramento State player this season.

Alexa Carino (double) and Lafulafu Malepeai (triple) both had extra base hits to round out the Hornets' five hits. Malepeai was not retired, going 1-for-1 with a triple and a walk.

Danyelle Leone was effective in the circle for Sacramento State, tossing 1.2 innings of shutout relief, allowing no hits with two strikeouts.

The Hornets canceled this weekend's trip to Oregon State (rain all weekend in Corvallis), so Sacramento State does not play again until hosting Columbia on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
