GYMNASTICS WRAPS UP HOMESTAND AGAINST CORNELL, ALASKA ANCHORAGE ON FRIDAY

Hornets and Aggies meet for the fourth of five times

OPENING PASS

  • Fresh off another season high, the Sacramento State gymnastics team will hold its final meet of the season on Friday, Mar. 14, when it welcomes UC Davis to The Nest at 7 p.m.
  • The Hornets most recently totaled 195.225 in a narrow win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday. The score topped the previous season best of 195.150 which came on Feb. 21 at Alaska Anchorage.
  • Following the meet on Friday, Sacramento State will honor four seniors who will be appearing at The Nest for the final time. The group is comprised of redshirt seniors Simone Dumas-Guzman and Emma Morgenthaler and true seniors Grace Gilman and Ruby Mach.

OPPONENT PREVIEW

  • UC Davis is red hot as the Aggies have scored at least 195 points in the last five meets, including eclipsing 196 in its last two contests. Most recently, UC Davis 196.025 in wins over Eastern Michigan and San Jose State.  That effort has taken the Aggies to 43rd nationally with an NQS of 195.355.
  • The return of Keanna Abraham form injury has played a large role in the team's success. Abraham leads the team with an NQS of 9.860 on vault and is second with a 9.870 on floor. Junior Amelia Moneymaker is also a catalyst as an all-arounder. Moneymaker has surpassed 39 points in the last six meets and tied her career high with a 39.400 against EMU and SJSU.
  • This week is the fourth of five meetings between the two teams this season. The Hornets earned a win in the season-opener at The Nest and also won in a quad meet at San Jose State. UCD picked up a win at home on Feb. 16 and the two teams will close the year at the MPSF Championships next weekend.

A LOOK AT THE LAST MEET

  • Hannah Sitzman won on bars, Sarah Lutrel tied for first on beam and Emma Morgenthaler claimed the top spot in the all-around to help Sacramento State to a season-high 195.225 last Sunday against Eastern Michigan at The Nest.
  • The Hornets led by .350 points heading into the final rotation and needed nearly every point of their 48.750 on floor to claim the victory. EMU saw its final three gymnasts score 9.900, 9.850 and 9.850 to momentarily take a one-tenth lead. That advantage, however, did not last long as Sarah Lutrel ended the meet with a 9.725 on floor to move Sacramento State on top.
  • EMU led by one-tenth after the first rotation only to have the Hornets take the lead during the second rotation and maintain the advantage throughout the competition. The total was just .325 away from cracking the school top 10.

SENIOR SENDOFF

  • Simone Dumas-Guzman: Returned for her fifth collegiate season this year…began her career at Seattle Pacific before transferring to the Hornets when SPU dropped gymnastics…has served as a floor specialist the last three years…set her career high with a 9.900 against Air Force in 2024.
  • Grace Gilman: Has competed on vault, beam and floor all four years…has been in the lineup for 133 routines during her career, with the majority from the leadoff position in each event…career bests are 9.850 on vault, 9.900 on beam and 9.875 on floor.
  • Ruby Mach: A four-year member of the team…has performed on bars and beam during her career…has taken on the duties of team manager this season…serves a vice president of the Sacramento State Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
  • Emma Morgenthaler: A fixture in the lineup since her freshman season…has been an all-arounder in 40 meets which is currently tied for fifth in school history and the most by a Hornet since Kaliah McCartney (2012-16)…qualified for the 2022 NCAA Regional as a vault specialist…has career highs of 9.900 on vault, 9.850 on bars, 9.825 on beam, 9.925 on floor and 39.325 in the all-around…is tied for fourth on floor and sixth on vault all-time at Sacramento State.

WORTH THE WAIT

  • Morgenthaler extended her streak of scoring at least 39 points to a career-best five consecutive meets as she won the all-around with a total of 39.125 on Sunday against Eastern Michigan. During the five-meet stretch, Morgenthaler is averaging 39.070 with a high of 39.150 coming in the first meet at Alaska Anchorage. She has moved up to 55th in the NQS rankings in the all-around and has room to grow as she is currently counting a score of 38.900 towards that mark. The top 12 all-arounders outside of the of the 36 teams who qualify for the postseason will earn an invitation to an NCAA Regional. Morgenthaler is currently ninth
  • She has scored 9.7 or better in all 20 of her routines during the five-meet run. Morgenthaler has finished first in the all-around four times this year and has also added a win on beam. During her four seasons, she has won 16 individual event and all-around titles.

REMEMBERING RANDY

  • Longtime Sacramento State gymnastics coach Randy Solorio passed away on Feb. 5 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Randy served the campus for nearly 40 years as an assistant coach, head coach and kinesiology instructor. The team will wear temporary tattoos for the remainder the year which will have a green and gold ribbon as well as Randy's initials.
