MEN’S BASKETBALL DROPS HOME FINALE TO MONTANA STATE

SACRAMENTO -- Montana State shot 62% (34-55) from the field and 54% (14-26) from the 3-point line on the way to an 87-60 victory over Sacramento State on Saturday afternoon.

Today marked the Hornets' final game in the Nest, as the team moves across campus into The Well next season. Built in 1955, Sacramento State was playing in its 70th and final year in the Nest (the team played at downtown Memorial Auditorium four years from 1996-00).

The Hornets close the regular season Monday at Portland State at 7 p.m. Regardless of what happens in that game, Sacramento State will play the first round of the Big Sky Tournament on March 8 at 4:30 p.m. PT. The Hornets will play either Weber State or Eastern Washington in that first round matchup. The winner of that game advances to play the No. 1 seed on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. PT, while the losing team is eliminated.

Montana State, which improved to 13-17 overall and 8-9 in league play, swept the season series over the Hornets which includes a victory in Bozeman on Jan. 30.

The Hornets led the first 10 minutes of clock, but the Bobcats closed the first half on a 20-9 run to take a 45-34 lead into the break. Montana State then scored the first five points of the second half and led by double figures the entire way as the Hornets had no answer for the Bobcats' hot shooting.

Sacramento State finished the game shooting a respectable 44% from the field and 35% from distance, but it was not nearly enough against a Bobcat team that also scored 24 points off 14 Sacramento State turnovers.

The Hornets were led by Jacob Holt's 24 points and six rebounds. He was joined in double figures by Emil Skytta's 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. No other scored more than six points. Bailey Nunn had a team-high seven assists while Chudi Dioramma finished with four points, six rebounds and a pair of assists. Leo Ricketts had six points, and EJ Neal had five points.

Holt has now led the team in scoring in five straight games.

The Hornets' game at Portland State on Monday evening marks the conclusion of the regular season.
