BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Sacramento State won the doubles point, and earned singles victories from
Henry Lamchinniah,
Gur Libal and
Hayden Rand to beat Portland State, 4-3, at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
The match was the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams as the Hornets improved to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in league. Each of the first five matches of the season have been on the road for Sacramento State, and the team has used four freshmen in the singles lineup in each of those contests.
Portland State dropped to 2-5 overall and 0-1 with the loss.
The Hornets earned the all-important doubles point, gathering victories from Lamchinniah/Libal at No. 1 (6-3), and
Nick Bowles/
Martin Duris at No. 3 (6-3).
With the Hornets leading, 1-0, Portland State took the first two singles matches at Nos. 3 and 6 to take a 2-1 advantage. However, the Hornets won the next three singles matches to clinch the four points and victory. Rand won his match at No. 4 (6-3, 6-0), followed by Lamchinniah at No. 1 (2-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Libal at No. 2 (7-5, 6-2).
Libal has now won three straight singles matches.
Sacramento State will get some home cooking next week when the team hosts Jessup on Wednesday, and UC Davis on Friday. Both matches start at 1 p.m.
