LIRA HOMERS TWICE, SOFTBALL SPLITS A PAIR ON 2ND DAY OF NORCAL KICKOFF

SACRAMENTO -- Andrea Lira clubbed two home runs and Katie Marsh added her second round tripper in as many days to lead the Hornets to a 9-1 five-inning victory over Utah Valley on Saturday afternoon at Shea Stadium.

Sacramento State dropped its nightcap to Boise State, 10-1, in five innings to complete its second day of the NorCal Kickoff. The tournament is a season-opening three day event that has seen the Hornets go 2-1 thus far. That included a 6-3 victory over Saint Mary's yesterday. Sacramento State concludes the event with a game against San Jose State tomorrow at noon.

In the first game of the day, Utah Valley defeated Boise State by a 6-5 score.

Lira and Jazzy Fines hit safely in both games as Sacramento State's highlight of the afternoon was a seven run third inning against Utah Valley that broke the game wide open. Against the Wolverines (1-3), the Hornets scored twice in the first inning, seven times in the third, and rode the arm of junior Kennedie Magorian who was impressive in her Sacramento State debut.

In the first inning, Lira and Marsh homered on back-to-back pitches to give the Hornets the early 2-0 lead. For Marsh, it was her second home run in as many days and both were opposite field shots, including a blast yesterday against Saint Mary's.

The seven-run third inning was highlighted by another Lira home run, a Fines RBI-single, Alexa Carino pinch-hit bases loaded walk, Marsh two-run double and a Lira RBI-groundout. Both of Lira's home runs were no doubters, well over the left field fence. She now has five RBIs through three games, has hit safely in each contest, and is 4-for-8 with three runs scored and two homers.

Marsh is also off to a hot start, hitting .625 (5-for-8) through three games with three runs, a double, two homers, a walk and four RBIs. Magorian, a transfer from College of San Mateo JC, allowed just one hit and one unearned run in five innings with six strikeouts. She did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, and it was an infield knock. The Foresthill, Calif., native needed just 76 pitches to complete her five-inning Hornet debut.

Lira and Marsh combined for four of the Hornets' seven hits in the game, and six of the team's eight RBIs.

In the loss to Boise State, the score was tied, 1-1, through three innings, but Boise State scored seven runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Broncos had 11 hits and took advantage of three Hornets errors as four of the team's runs were unearned.

Sacramento State did not muster much offensively against Julianne Rose and Shannon Keighran. The Hornets had just four hits and one run (pinch runner Faith Epperson scored on an error in the second). Sacramento State received hits from Gwen Ludwig, Caroline Evans (double), Lira and Fines.

The Hornets used three pitchers (Alexa Ortiz, Jenna Birch, Danyelle Leone). For Leone and Birch, it was their first appearances of the season.

Tomorrow's final day of the NorCal Kickoff features two games - Utah Valley vs. San Jose State at 9:30 a.m., and the Hornets vs. San Jose State at noon.
