LUTREL CLAIMS TOP SPOT ON VAULT; GYMNASTICS FALLS TO SOUTHERN UTAH

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Sarah Lutrel finished in first place on vault but the Sacramento State gymnastics team counted a pair of falls in a 196.150-192.725 loss at No. 29 Southern Utah on Friday night.

The Hornets encountered trouble during its first rotation, finishing bars with a team score of 47.675. Hannah Sitzman led off the lineup with a 9.750 which proved to be the highest score for the team on the event. Freshman Maliyah James later added a 9.725 before the team had falls in its final two routines. That team score placed Sacramento State more than a full point behind SUU which finished vault with a 48.700.

The team's highest score of the night came on vault during the second rotation. Lutrel led the way with a 9.800 from her anchor position for her third win on vault this season and seventh of her career. Grace Gilman and Kaitlyn Driessen just missed spots on the podium as the pair tied for fourth place with 9.750s.

The Hornets finished floor with a 48.475 during the third rotation. Athena Jones and Lutrel each scored 9.775 but the team was unable to match the pace of the Thunderbirds which tallied 49.050 on beam.

Sacramento State wrapped up the meet with a 47.925 on beam. Falls on two of the first three routines squashed the team's streak of 27 consecutive meets with scoring at least 193 points. Lutrel, once again, had the high mark on the team, scoring 9.775 while Emma Morgenthaler had a 9.700.

The Hornets will return to Northern California to compete at UC Davis on Sunday, Feb. 16. The meeting will be the third of five matchups this season between the two teams — the first two have been won by Sacramento State.
