SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Sacramento State's potent offense, and solid pitching were on full display in the Hornets' doubleheader sweep of Cal Poly on Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets outscored the Mustangs by a combined 20-1 score, as Sacramento State won the first game, 8-1, before taking the nightcap, 12-0, in a 5-inning mercy rule shortened contest.
These same two teams will complete the three-game series tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Bob Janssen Field. Sacramento State improved to 8-4 with the wins, while Cal Poly dropped to 2-8.
Over two games this afternoon, the Hornet offense combined to hit .379 (22-for-58) with nine doubles, two triples, 16 RBIs, a .603 slugging percentage and .456 on-base percentage. Sacramento State put up crooked-number innings five times during the doubleheader, including the first (4) and second (3) innings of the opener. Then, in the nightcap, the Hornets dropped three runs in the second, two in the fourth, and seven in the fifth.
Sacramento State never trailed in either game, and was never really threatened. Sacramento State pitchers
Caroline Evans (Game 1) and
Kennedie Magorian (Game 2) both threw complete games while Magorian threw her first shutout in a Hornet uniform. Evans allowed just three hits and a run with seven strikeouts over seven innings, while Magorian blanked Cal Poly on three hits with five strikeouts.
Evans had quite the afternoon, as she was also lethal with the bat. Offensively, the senior went 5-for-7 with two doubles and three RBIs.
Katie Marsh continued her hot hitting, going 5-for-7 with three runs, three doubles and three RBIs. Marsh has been mashing all season, as she now leads the team in batting average (.515), runs (11), hits (17), doubles (6), homers (4), slugging percentage (1.121) and on-base percentage (.579).
Other Hornets with multiple hits today included:
•
Andrea Lira 4-for-8 with 3 runs, a double, triple and 3 RBIs
•
Nikki Barboza 2-for-3 with 2 runs, 2 doubles, 4 walks and an .857 ob%
•
Shannon Garcia 2-for-6 with a double, triple and team-best 4 RBIs
Addy Buckley,
Avery Brown,
Gwen Ludwig and
Jazzy Fines also had hits. Of the 17 players used today, 12 scored runs. Sacramento State was 3-for-3 in stolen base attempts (Ludwig, Fines and
Karissa Avila), and is now 23-for-26 this season.
The Hornets had three players increase their hitting streaks today, including Marsh (6 games), Garcia (4) and Fines (3).
