SOFTBALL FALLS AT CAL POLY, STILL WINS THE 3-GAME SERIES

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly overcame a 3-0 deficit with a run in the fourth, and six more in the fifth on the way to a 7-3 victory over Sacramento State on Sunday afternoon at Bob Janssen Field.

Despite the loss, the Hornets (8-5) took two of three games in the series, which included a doubleheader sweep yesterday of the Mustangs (3-10). Today's game also completed a season-long nine game road trip for the Hornets.

Sacramento State jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a two-run homer from Lafulafu Malepeai in the second inning. The transfer from College of San Mateo connected on her first NCAA Div. I blast, a first-pitch shot to the opposite field.

The Hornets tacked on another run in the third when Nikki Barboza's ground ball drove home Katie Marsh. The Hornets had runners at second and third with no on outs in the inning, but pushed across just the single run.

Sacramento State starter Alexa Ortiz was impressive in her four innings of work, allowing just three hits and a run with three strikeouts. However, Cal Poly got to the Hornets' bullpen in the fifth. Sacramento State used a total of four pitchers, and two of those Mustang runs in the fifth inning were unearned.

Two players accounted for the Hornets' five hits, including Gwen Ludwig who went 3-for-3 with a walk and two stolen bases. Malepeai finished 2-for-3 with a run, homer and a pair of RBIs. Katie Marsh saw her six-game hitting streak come to an end, finishing 0-for-2 with a walk, run, stolen base, and hit-by-pitch.

Caroline Evans walked twice and scored a run.

The Hornets have a busy week ahead, as the team plays five straight days between Wednesday and Sunday. The Hornets will play six games during that stretch, including five at home. That begins on Wednesday with a home matchup vs. UC Davis at 2 p.m., followed by a home game Thursday vs. BYU at 2 p.m.
