GYMNASTICS BACK IN NORCAL TO TAKE ON UC DAVIS ON SUNDAY

OPENING PASS

  • For the first time this month, the Sacramento State gymnastics team will get to remain in Northern California as the Hornets make the short trip across the causeway to take on UC Davis on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m.
  • Sacramento State is coming off a disappointing 192.725 at Southern Utah last Friday night which saw the team count a pair of falls and suffer four falls overall. The score was the lowest of the season for the Hornets and snapped the team's 27-meet streak of scoring at least 193 points.
  • The Hornets are in the midst of six consecutive meets away from home. The stretch began on Jan. 26 with a meet at San Jose State and has also seen the team compete at Boise State and Southern Utah. Sacramento State will remain on the road next week as it has two meets at Alaska Anchorage on Friday and Sunday. The team will end the regular season with three meets at The Nest before returning to Alaska for the MPSF Championships.
  • Links to live stats and a video stream for this week's meet can be found on hornetsports.com.

OPPONENT PREVIEW

  • Sacramento State and UC Davis are meeting for the third of five times this season. The Hornets have captured the first two meetings winning 194.700-193.525 in the season opener at The Nest and 193.000-192.600 at San Jose State. Sacramento State now leads the all-time series, 62-59, dating back to 1992.
  • The Aggies have recorded their second and third best scores of the season in the last two meets. Most recently, UC Davis tallied a 194.350 in a three-team meet against Oregon State and Alaska Anchorage.
  • Amelia Moneymaker has been the team's lone all-arounder during the year and is averaging 38.579. Moneymaker is also the team leader on floor with an average of 9.846. Keanna Abraham has bounced back from an early-season injury and has an average of 9.800 on vault.

A LOOK AT THE LAST MEET

  • Sarah Lutrel finished in first place on vault but Sacramento State counted a pair of falls in a 196.150-192.725 loss at No. 29 Southern Utah on Feb. 7.
  • The Hornets encountered trouble during its first rotation, finishing bars with a team score of 47.675. Hannah Sitzman led off the lineup with a 9.750 which proved to be the highest score for the team on the event. Freshman Maliyah James later added a 9.725 before the team had falls in its final two routines.
  • The team's highest score of the night came on vault during the second rotation. Lutrel led the way with a 9.800 from her anchor position for her third win on vault this season and seventh of her career. Grace Gilman and Kaitlyn Driessen just missed spots on the podium as the pair tied for fourth place with 9.750s.
  • The Hornets finished floor with a 48.475 during the third rotation. Athena Jones and Lutrel each scored 9.775.
  • Sacramento State wrapped up the meet with a 47.925 on beam. Lutrel, once again, had the high mark on the team, scoring 9.775 while Emma Morgenthaler had a 9.700.

SILVER LININGS

  • Junior Sarah Lutrel provided a bright spot for the team at Southern Utah. Lutrel led or tied for the team lead in all three of her events, including recording an event title on vault. She matched her season high with a 9.800 on vault  to earn her third win of the season on the event and seventh of her career. Lutrel later added a 9.775 on floor and beam.
  • Leading the team on all three of her events is nothing new for Lutrel as she currently owns the highest scoring average among Hornets with a 9.767 on vault, a 9.792 on beam and a 9.738 on floor.
  • Lutrel also extended a streak which has seen at least one Sacramento State gymnast claim an individual title in every meet this season. In all, nine different Hornets have combined to win 13 event/all-around titles in 2025 led by four wins from Lutrel (three vault, one beam). Athena Jones is the only other member of the team to have multiple titles as she has finished first on beam and floor. The other event victories belong to Grace Gilman on vault, Kara Houghton, Chloe Cohen and Hannah Sitzman on bars, Rylin Zimmerman and Kaitlyn Driessen on beam and Emma Morgenthaler in the all-around.

LINEUP LOGIC

  • Sacramento State has yet to use the same lineup in consecutive meets this season. The steadiest lineup has come on beam where Gilman (first), Morgenthaler (second), Jones (fourth), Lutrel (fifth) and Houghton (sixth) have started in the same position in every meet. Outside of beam, Gilman's leadoff spot in the only one to stay consistent in the six meets this season.

HOME SWEET HOME

  • Sacramento State moved into its new training facility this past summer. The building, which is located on Folsom Blvd. and is within walking distance of campus, marks the first time the Hornets will have access to its own facility in school history. The training site has a full size competition floor and several sets of the other apparatus as well as a locker room, athletic training space and team lounge.

REMEMBERING RANDY

  • Longtime Sacramento State gymnastics coach Randy Solorio passed away on Feb. 5 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Randy served the campus for nearly 40 years as an assistant coach, head coach and kinesiology instructor. The team will wear temporary tattoos for the remainder the year which will have a green and gold ribbon as well as Randy's initials.
