SACRAMENTO, Calif. — After leading the team in every receiving category, wide receiver
Ernest Campbell was named FCS Football Central Freshman All-American team, it was announced today.
Â
Campbell caught at least one pass in the final 11 games of the season and led the team with 37 receptions for 755 yards and eight touchdowns during his first season with the Hornets. His average of 20.41 yards per reception ranks eighth in school single-season history and set the school record by a freshman.
Â
The Refugio, Texas native's breakout game came against Montana in a nationally-televised game where he had nine receptions for 206 yards and a touchdown. He also crossed the century mark at Portland State with 103 yards and two TDs on just four catches.
Â
During the season, Campbell was a constant big-play threat as he had six receptions of least 50 yards. That total blew past the previous Sacramento State single-season record of four and places him just one 50-yard reception shy of Andre Lindsey's career record.
Â
Campbell added seven rushing yards and 38 kick return yards to finish the season with 800 all-purpose yards which ranked second on the team.
