MEN’S BASKETBALL STARTS SEASON 2-0 WITH 86-76 VICTORY OVER JESSUP

SACRAMENTO -- Jeremiah Cherry (15 pts, 12 reb) and Prophet Johnson (16 pts, 11 reb) both posted double-doubles to lead Sacramento State to an 86-76 victory over Jessup on Friday evening at Hornet Pavilion.

Like the season opener on Tuesday, fans packed the brand new Hornet Pavilion and the Hornets delivered an 86-point performance that included nine different players cracking the scoring column.

The game was also the second for head coach Mike Bibby, who accepted the position on March 25. Bibby has the Hornets and their 14 new players off to a 2-0 start for the first time in five years.

Tonight was the second leg of a season-opening three game homestand that includes a date with UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

The Hornets led for over 35 minutes of game clock, outscoring the Warriors by four points in the first half, and six in the second half. Sacramento State shot 45% (27-60) from the field, 45% (13-29) from the 3-point line and 70% (19-27) from the free throw line. The Hornets also turned 10 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points.

The team also had nine blocked shots (five from Cherry) that helped limit Jessup to 42% shooting (30-72) from the field. Sacramento State had 19 assists on its 27 made buckets, including a game-high eight dimes from Mikey Williams.

Cherry has now posted double-doubles in each of the first two games of the season, and is averaging 16.0 points and 11.0 boards per game. Johnson's double-double also accompanied 10 made free throws, five assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Four Hornets scored in double figures, including Jayden Teat's game-high 19 points (7-13 FG, 5-9 3FG). Williams finished with 16 points, six rebounds, eight assists, one steal and a game-high +17 in plus/minus.

Combined, the foursome of Cherry, Teat, Johnson and Williams scored all but 20 of the Hornets' points. Shaqir O'Neal added five points and three rebounds, Jahni Summers six points, Mark Lavrenov four points, two boards and two blocks, Taj Glover three points, and Brandon Gardner two points.

Jessup is an NCAA Div. II member from Rocklin, Calif., and is a member of the PacWest Conference. Sacramento State is now 10-0 all-time against the Warriors.

The Hornets will get their first true test of the season on Tuesday when they welcome UC Santa Barbara to Hornet Pavilion for a 7 p.m. tip. The Gauchos were selected second in the Big West Conference preseason coaches poll.

NOTABLES
