Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MEN’S BASKETBALL HAS LITTLE TROUBLE IN 94-46 VICTORY OVER SAN FRANCISCO STATE

SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State's Prophet Johnson and Jahni Summer both connected for 21 points on the way to a 94-46 victory over San Francisco State on Tuesday evening in front of another packed house at Hornet Pavilion.

The Hornets led from start to finish, and were never threatened in a game that saw all 12 players crack the scoring column. That includes Summers (6-for-9) and Johnson (4-for-7) who combined to shoot 10-of-16 from the 3-point line. Sacramento State outscored the Gators, 49-23, in the first half, and 45-23 in the second half.

The Hornets held sizable advantages in rebounds (56-36), points off turnovers (20-2), points in the paint (40-16), second chance points (20-2) and fast break points (21-6). The Hornets, who shot 48% from the field, limited the Gators to 24% shooting (15-63), which included 5-for-34 from distance.

Today's game renewed a rivalry with San Francisco State that stretched from 1948-91 when both programs were Div. II status. In fact, both teams were in the same conference (Far Western) from 1953-82. Today's meeting was the first since Jan. 7, 1991, which also happened to be the Hornets' final season at the Div. II level. While the Hornets jumped to Div. I prior to the 1991-92 season, San Francisco State has remained in the Div. II ranks.

Sacramento State is now 42-41 all-time against the Gators, including 28-14 at home. San Francisco State currently plays in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).

Today's game marked Sacramento State's final non-conference game at Hornet Pavilion. In fact, the Hornets' game in Stockton this Saturday at Pacific begins a seven-game road trip (four non-league, and the first three Big Sky Conference games). Sacramento State will go 50 straight days without a home game as the team does not return to Hornet Pavilion until its Big Sky home opener on Jan. 15 vs. Northern Arizona.

Johnson had a huge game with 21 points, seven rebounds, five assists and six steals. Summers' 21 points were one shy of his career high as he was a +30 in plus/minus in 24 minutes of action. Shaqir O'Neal had nine points and five rebounds, Taj Glover eight points and six rebounds, and Brandon Gardner seven points, three rebounds and a season-best three blocked shots.

Jeremiah Nyarko, who missed the first seven games with injury, made his first Sacramento State appearance tonight and finished with two points and four rebounds in six minutes. Jayden Teat added four points and six rebounds, and Arman Madi scored his first Hornet points, finishing with four points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 13 minutes.

Mikey Williams had eight points and led all players with eight assists. Mark Lavrenov finished with four points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Sacramento State is back in action this Saturday when the Hornets travel to Pacific for a 7 p.m. matchup. The Hornets and Tigers will be playing each other for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
