VOLLEYBALL BEATS PORTLAND STATE ON SENIOR NIGHT; REMAINS IN 2ND PLACE IN BIG SKY

SACRAMENTO -- Victoria Marthaler had 19 kills, Keonahi'ilani Solaita 17 kills, and Reese Ampi 29 digs to lead Sacramento State to a 3-1 victory (26-24, 22-25, 25-18, 30-28) over Portland State on Friday evening at the Nest.

Tonight marked the final home match of the season, and the last match in the Nest for seniors Ashlynn Archer, Greta Davis, Kate Doorn, Mia Guevara, Abbey Kadillak and Karlie Spohn.

Sacramento State (17-9, 10-4) moves back into a tie for second place in the Big Sky Conference standings with two matches left on the regular season schedule. Northern Arizona beat Weber State in five sets last night and remains in first place at 11-3. Both the Hornets and Northern Colorado are 10-4. Sacramento State has already secured a spot in the Big Sky Tournament (top eight advance), which will take place Nov. 24-26 in Greeley, Colo.

Sacramento State's final two regular season matches will take place next week on the road at Eastern Washington on Wednesday, and Idaho on Friday. To claim a share of the Big Sky regular season title, the Hornets will need to win both matches, and see Northern Arizona drop one of its final two (home vs Idaho State; road at Northern Colorado).

The Hornets went 10-4 at the Nest this season, and 7-1 vs. Big Sky opposition. In addition, the team has now won 10 conference matches for the sixth consecutive season. Since 2015, Sacramento State is 76-13 vs. Big Sky competition at the Nest. Head coach Ruben Volta also moved to within four wins of career number 300.

Including a 3-1 victory at Portland State in early October, the Hornets swept the season series vs. the Vikings. Sacramento State owns a 56-28 all-time record against Portland State - the 84 matches played is the longest series for the Hornets against any opponent.

The two teams combined for 152 digs and 21.0 team blocks as defense was on hand all evening. Portland State was limited to a .153 hitting percentage while Sacramento State hit .191. Three Hornets had double figures in digs, led by libero Reese Ampi's match-high 29. Doorn posted her 28th career double-double with 42 assists, 11 digs and career-high tying six blocks. Marthaler registered her third double-double of the season with 10 digs to go with her team-high 19 kills.

Solaita, a true freshman, hit .350 with her 17 kills and eight digs. Spohn had seven kills and five blocks, Davis seven kills and two blocks, and Guevara seven digs. Archer had five kills and five blocks. The Hornets were limited to three aces (lowest total against a Big Sky team), but found a way to win all the big points in the two close sets.

Sacramento State returns to action next week when it travels to Eastern Washington on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and Idaho on Friday at 5 p.m. The Big Sky Tournament will begin on that following Monday (Nov. 24) with the quarterfinal round. The semis will take place on Nov. 25, and championship on Nov. 26. The Hornets will be seeking their second straight Big Sky Tournament title.
