VOLLEYBALL BEATS EASTERN WASHINGTON, HAS CHANCE TO WIN REGULAR SEASON TITLE ON FRIDAY

CHENEY, Wash. - Three Hornets posted double figures in kills - Victoria Marthaler (14), Ashlynn Archer (10) and Keonahi'ilani Solaita (10) - to lead Sacramento State to a road sweep at Eastern Washington (25-16, 25-16, 25-17) on Wednesday evening at Reese Court.

With the victory, Sacramento State (18-9, 11-4) moves back into a tie for second place with Northern Colorado (11-4). With just one match left in the regular season, the Hornets have an opportunity to win a share of the Big Sky Conference regular season title. They would need to win Friday in the regular season finale at Idaho (5 pm start) and hope that Northern Arizona (12-3) loses at Northern Colorado (also a 5 pm match on Friday).

Should that happen, there would be a three-way tie for the Big Sky 's regular season title involving the Hornets, Northern Colorado and Northern Arizona. In that scenario, Northern Colorado would be the 1 seed, NAU the 2 seed, and Sacramento State the 3 seed. Should the Hornets and Northern Arizona both win on Friday, NAU would be the outright regular season champ and Sacramento State would be the 2 seed.

The Big Sky Tournament begins on Monday in Greeley, Colo., and the Hornets will play a quarterfinal match that day against an opponent and time TBA. The semifinal round is Tuesday, and the championship match is Wednesday. The Hornets won last year's tournament title and represented the Big Sky at the NCAA Tournament.

The Hornets sweep the season series with Eastern Washington (including a win earlier this year in the Nest), and have won 10 straight in the series. Sacramento State also moved its record to 47-18 all-time against the Eagles. Of the six sets played this year against EWU, five straight were decided by 25-16 scores until the third set tonight ended at 25-17.

Sacramento State hit .291 compared to just .105 for Eastern Washington. The Hornets were in control throughout the match as the Eagles' largest lead was 5-4 in the second set. Sacramento State more than doubled the Eagles in kills (44-20) and also had 14 more digs (46-32).

Marthaler now has 14+ kills in 16 straight matches, and she hit .357 with a match-best four aces. Archer, already 13th in the nation in hitting percentage, will improve upon that mark as she hit a ridiculous .741 with 10 kills and zero errors in 14 swings. She is now hitting .437 this season, and is well on her way to setting the new Sacramento State and Big Sky record for single-season hitting percentage.

Solaita registered double-figure kills for the seventh time this season, and the true freshman also added eight digs. Libero Reese Ampi led all players with 16 digs, and has now tallied 72 in the last three matches. Setter Kate Doorn had 26 assists, as she closes in on 3,000 assists (currently has 2,974) during her collegiate career.

Nine different Hornets had kills, including Kelsey Heffner (3), Karlie Spohn (2) and Greta Davis (2). Mia Guevara had seven digs, her fourth straight match with at least seven. All 16 players on the roster appeared in tonight's match.
