SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State sophomore outside hitter
Victoria Marthaler has been named the Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the third time this season.
Marthaler helped the Hornets to a 1-1 record last week against two of the top teams in the conference. Both matches were five setters at home, and included a victory over Northern Arizona and a loss to Northern Colorado.
She has now won the award three times in the last six weeks (Oct. 6, Oct. 20) and has established herself as the top offensive force in the Big Sky. Including Hornet outside hitter
Keonahi'ilani Solaita earning the honor last week, a Hornet has received the award four times in the last six weeks.
Marthaler finished the week with 59 kills, good for an average of 5.90 kills per set. She also added three aces, and posted match highs in kills in both contests.
In the Hornets' win over NAU on Thursday, she had 27 kills and three aces, and her kills were 10 more than any other player in the match. In the fifth set alone, she notched five kills and hit .500. In the loss to Northern Colorado, Marthaler posted 32 kills (one shy of a career best), and the 32 kills were 17 more than any player from either team.
She continues to lead the Big Sky in overall kills per set (4.98) and conference only kills per set (5.96). In addition, she is seventh in the nation in kills per set, and eighth in the country in points per set (5.46).
Sacramento State (16-9, 9-4) currently sits in a tie for second place in the Big Sky standings with three regular season matches left. Northern Arizona sits in first with a 10-3 record while both the Hornets and Northern Colorado are second at 9-4.
