HOLT’S CAREER-HIGH 35 POINTS NOT ENOUGH IN HOME LOSS TO IDAHO

SACRAMENTO -- Despite a career night from senior forward Jacob Holt, Sacramento State fell to Idaho, 80-67, on Thursday evening at the Nest.

Holt scored over half the Hornets' points, finishing with 35 points, 10 rebounds and two steals. He was 8-for-14 from the field, 2-of-2 from distance, and 17-for-21 from the free throw line. He had 14 points in the first half, and added 21 more in the second half. It marked his third straight double-double, and he is now averaging 22.5 points and 10.0 rebounds in Big Sky Conference play.

The 35 points were the fifth highest output in Sacramento State's Div. I era (1991-pres.), and were a career high. In fact, that was the second highest scoring output by a Hornet in 16 years, trailing only Bryce Fowler's 39 points at Montana in 2022.

His free throws made and attempted are both new Hornet Div. I era single-game records, surpassing the previous marks by two in both categories. Holt scored over half of Sacramento State's points in both the first and second halves.

The Hornets (5-10, 1-1) saw their three-game winning streak halted, and are now 3-1 on the season-long five game homestand that concludes Saturday vs. Eastern Washington. Sacramento State kicked off conference play with a victory over Portland State last Saturday.

Idaho improved to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in conference play, as the Vandals split a pair of home games vs. the Montana schools last week. Idaho also avenged last year's Big Sky Tournament first round loss to the Hornets.

The Big Sky's top 3-point shooting team played the part tonight, as Idaho buried 13 3-pointers and finished at 38 percent (13-34) from distance. The Vandals opened the game on a 22-11 run, connecting on 9-for-13 from the field and 4-of-8 from 3PT during the spurt. Idaho never trailed, as Sacramento State was playing catchup all evening. Seemingly every time the Hornets got within striking distance, Idaho would bury a 3-ball to thwart the run. The Vandals finished the game 49% (28-57) from the field.

The Hornets went to the free throw line a season-high 32 times (making 23, 72%), and shot 42% (8-19) from long range, but made 10 less field goals than Idaho. The Hornets held a 31-28 rebounding advantage, and turned 11 offensive boards into nine second chance points.

Joining Holt in double figures for Sacramento State was Julian Vaughns who finished with 13 points (4-7 FG, 3-5 3FG, 2-2 FT) and four assists. Point guard Bailey Nunn played all 40 minutes, finishing with five points, seven assists and a career-high seven rebounds.

Both EJ Neal and Lachlan Brewer finished with five points and a 3-ball. Emil Skytta, who played all but 10 seconds in the game, chipped in four points and three boards. The Hornets received just five points from their bench.

Sacramento State is back in action Saturday afternoon vs. Eastern Washington at 1 p.m. After Saturday's contest, the Hornets will play just two of their next eight games in the Nest.
