SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly won the doubles point, and took four singles matches to defeat Sacramento State, 5-0, at the Ronca Tennis Center.
The Hornets, playing just their second match of the season (both on the road), dropped to 0-2 with the loss. The Mustangs were playing their season opener.
Sacramento State, in the midst of a rebuilding season, used four freshmen and a sophomore in the singles lineup. Cal Poly took advantage, winning the doubles point and earning victories at Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles before the match was stopped because the Mustangs had already clinched victory.
The Hornets used the following lineup: No. 1
Henry Lamchinniah, No. 2
Nick Bowles, No. 3
Gur Libal, No. 4
Hayden Rand, No. 5
Martin Duris and No. 6
Miles Whitehead. Rand is the lone senior, the lone returner, and the lone upperclassman on the Hornets' roster.
Lamchinniah, a sophomore, had his match stopped in the third set after splitting the first two frames, and Duris had his match halted at 7-6, 5-5 in the second.
The Hornets will play their home opener on Friday vs. Pacific at 1 p.m. The Hornets will play twice at home next week, including Sunday vs. UC San Diego at 1 p.m.
