GYMNASTICS REMAINS UNBEATEN WITH WINS OVER CORNELL AND ALASKA ANCHORAGE

Hornets score 194.100 and win all four individual event titles

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State gymnasts finished first in all four events and the Hornets improved to 5-0 on the season with a pair of wins over Cornell and Alaska Anchorage. The team recorded its 13th consecutive meet over a 194 with a total of 194.100. Cornel was second at 191.500 while the Seawolves took third (189.775).
 
Sacramento State found itself in second place through the first rotation as it only managed a 48.150 on vault compared to a 48.350 on floor from Alaska Anchorage. Sarah Lutrel finished first on the event with a 9.750 while Rylin Zimmerman tied for second at 9.700.
 
The Hornets moved into the lead for good during the second rotation with a team score of 48.225. Kara Houghton won the event with a 9.775 while freshman Maliyah James and sophomore Athena Jones scored 9.700 and 9.650 to place second and third respectively.
 
The biggest separation for the team occurred in the final two rotations. Sacramento State produced a team score of 48.800 on beam and took over a two-point lead after the event. Grace Gilman led off with a 9.750 and finished tied for third with Kara Houghton who anchored the lineup. Lutrel won the event with a season-high 9.875 while Athena Jones placed second with a 9.825.
 
The Hornets produced their highest team score on floor this season with a 48.925 during the final rotation. Simone Dumas-Guzman led off with a 9.700 and was followed by a career-high 9.825 from Olivia Schmitt who tied for second place. Houghton matched that score in the next routine before Lutrel scored 9.725. Needing a 9.775 or better to continue the team's 194-point streak, Jones set a season high with a 9.850 to win the event.
 
After opening the season with three meets at home, the Hornets will start a stretch of six road meets with a four-team meet at San Jose State on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 2 p.m.
