SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Despite a three-set win at No. 1 from
Henry Lamchinniah, Sacramento State dropped its season opener at Santa Clara, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon.
The match was the season opener for both teams. The Hornets used a singles lineup that included four freshmen and just one returner. Sacramento State, the defending Big Sky Conference Tournament champions, has just one returner on the roster -
Hayden Rand who played at No. 4.
Lamchinniah is a sophomore, and the four freshmen in the lineup are
Gur Libal (No. 2),
Nick Bowles (No. 3),
Martin Duris (No. 5) and
Miles Whitehead (No. 6).
Lamchinniah, a transfer from Southern Miss, had an impressive Hornet debut with a 6-4, 6-7 (3), 10-6 victory at No. 1 over Lukas Maskow. Libal (6-2, 6-3), Bowles (7-5, 6-2), Rand (7-6, 6-0), Duris (6-4, 6-1) and Whitehead (6-0, 6-0) each fell.
Sacramento State does not play again until traveling to San Luis Obispo for a matchup at Cal Poly on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 2 p.m.
