SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State had 10 aces, and limited to CSUN to an .094 hitting percentage on the way to a three-set sweep of the Matadors (25-20, 25-19, 25-16), on Thursday evening in the Nest.
The match marked the home opener for the Hornets, and the team's opener of the three-day Sacramento State Invitational. San Francisco defeated New Mexico State, 3-2, in the first match of the day. Two more tourney contests take place tomorrow, highlighted by Sacramento State facing New Mexico State at 7 p.m.
The Hornets, who opened the season last week in San Luis Opispo, improved to 1-2 overall with the victory.
The Matadors were held to hitting percentages below .150 in all three sets, as CSUN finished with 32 kills and 23 errors in 96 swings. Sacramento State used 6-0 runs in both the first and second sets, and added a 10-3 run in the third to take control of each frame.
The Hornets had 10 aces, including a career-high tying five from
Caitlin Volkmann who unleashed a wicked jump serve all evening. Libero
Reese Ampi, playing her first home match in a Hornet uniform, added two aces to go with a team-best eight digs.
Bridgette Smith led the Hornets in kills for the third consecutive match, finishing with 11 kills, a .290 hitting percentage and seven digs. The reigning All-American and Big Sky MVP moved into 10th all-time in Sacramento State history with 1,346 career kills.
Volkmann posted six kills, six digs and three blocks to go with her five aces.
Karlie Spohn, playing her first home match at Sacramento State, finished with three kills, match-best four blocks and a .500 hitting percentage.
Kate Doorn (13) and
Hailey Plugge (10) combined for 23 assists as the two setters successfully ran a 6-2 offense. Ellie Tikso had four kills, both
Ashlynn Archer and
Greta Davis posted three kills, and
Abbey Kadillak had a pair of digs.
Tomorrow evening, prior to the Hornets' match at 7 p.m., CSUN will play San Francisco at 4 p.m.
