MOSCOW, Idaho — A strong second half for Sacramento State that saw the Hornets pepper the Idaho goal to the tune of a 10-4 shot advantage wasn't enough to dethrone the reigning Big Sky Conference tournament champions as the Vandals scored a goal in each half en route to a 2-0 victory on Friday night.
Sacramento State, which is winless in its last three, fell to 2-5-3 overall with the loss and 0-1 in league play. Idaho, meanwhile, remained unbeaten in its last four (3-0-1) while improving to 7-3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
The Vandals needed just 7:31 to break up the scoreless deadlock as Alyssa Peters snuck a free kick from just outside the box through the Hornets' defensive wall and inside the left post for the 1-0 advantage.
It stayed that way through the remainder of the period and into the second half where the Hornets looked to turn things around. Sacramento State, held to just two shot attempts in the opening 45, came out swinging to start the second.
The Hornets attempted the first nine shots of the second half, forcing Idaho keeper Paula Flores into a trio of saves, and did not allow the Vandals to get one off during the run of play until the 74th minute when Sienna Gonzales had one blocked by the Sacramento State defense.
However, a minute before that, Hannah Alfaro gave the Vandals a two-goal advantage following a foul by the Hornets in the box, converting on a penalty kick to the lower-left corner to make it 2-0.
Sydney Sharts had a header flicked on frame turned away by Flores and a follow-up shot blocked by the defense in the 65th minute, while Madelyn Dougherty had her shot in traffic smothered by Flores on the doorstep.
Jaety Mandaquit also had a rocket from about eight yards out knocked down in the 70th and Teysha-Ray Spinney-Kuahuia had her attempt denied at the near post a minute later.
Idaho held a 16-12 shot advantage for the match, putting eight of their attempts on frame. Mandaquit led all Hornets — and tied for match-high honors — with four shots for the match while sophomore goalkeeper Izzy Palmatier stopped six shots on the night.
