SAN JOSE, Calif. — Freshman Ethan Kelly netted his first career goal in the 14th minute to stake the Sacramento State men's soccer team to an early lead, but host San Jose State would even the score 10 minutes later and strike for the game-winner midway through the second half en route to a 2-1 victory on Sunday night in San Jose, Calif.
Kelly, who put both of his shot attempts on frame for the match, became the second Hornet newcomer to net a goal this season, scoring off a pass from classmate Vincent Padilla, who tallied his first collegiate point with the assist, to make it 1-0 in the early going on Sunday.
San Jose State's Jordi Tortell Daly then evened things up off an assist from Gilberto Rivera in the 24th minute with his first goal of the year, then added an assist on Diogo Baptista's game-winner (and second of the season) in the 75th minute to help lift the Spartans to the victory.
Sacramento State finished the night with a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks — all coming in the second half — for the team's highest single-match total since the Hornets had the same number at Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 14 of last season. San Jose State finished with a 10-7 advantage in shot attempts, including 7-3 in shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Mac Learned finished with five saves in net, putting him just four shy of breaking onto the school's career top-10 list with 133.
The Hornets return to the pitch with a single match next week, traveling south to take on San Diego State on Friday (Sept. 6) at 7 p.m. to close out a run of three straight on the road.
