SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A longtime dream became reality for the Sacramento State gymnastics team as the program will move into its new training facility on Aug. 1. The building, which is within walking distance of campus on Folsom Blvd., gives the team access to a dedicated training site for the first time in program history. University Enterprises, Inc. (UEI), an auxiliary organization serving Sacramento State, owns the building in which the facility is located and donated over $2,000,000 of its own funds to build out the space for the university's gymnastics team.
Â
"The student-athlete experience for Hornets Gymnastics has just leveled up," Sacramento State head coach
Melissa Genovese said. "This new facility is monumental for our gymnasts, coaches, and program. To finally have a home that is ours is indescribable.
Â
"This moment would not have happened without former head coach Randy Solorio having a vision and making it happen. I also want to recognize Kim Hughes, who dedicated 38 years of building the culture of success and love for Sac State gymnastics, the many donors that supported us along the way, and UEI who funded the project and turned our dreams into reality."
Â
"UEI is pleased to support Sacramento State's gymnastics team by providing the space and funds needed to transform the idea of this project into a reality," UEI executive director John M. Melikian commented.Â
Â
Along with the convenience of the location of the training facility, the building will be loaded with all the necessary equipment needed for team success. Among the equipment that the student-athletes will have access to include:
Â
- 4 high beams, 2 low beamsÂ
- Three full sets of bars, including one over an open foam pit and one over a resi pit. As well as a single rail
- Two vaults, one into open foam and one into a resi pit
- Power Elite Floor
- Rod floor, tumbling strip and tumble trakÂ
- All green matting with custom school logosÂ
- Two ropes and strength and conditioning equipment
Â
"This is a great day for our student-athletes and gymnastics program," Sacramento State Director of Athletics Mark Orr said. "I want to thank former Sacramento State president Robert Nelsen, current president Luke Wood and the leadership at UEI that worked to see this project to completion. Having a dedicated training facility available to our gymnasts at this location will not only benefit the team competitively, it allows additional flexibility in their class selection and reduces the time spent commuting to practice."
